Rare Books Department Hours and Upcoming Events

Unigenitus 1713-2013
On September 8, 1713 Pope Clement XI issued the Apostolic Constitution Unigenitus Dei Filius, condemning 101 theological propositions of Pasquier Quesnel. Intended by the Pope and Louis XIV to root out French Jansenism once and for all, the bull had the opposite effect, arousing a storm of controversy, legal, religious, public, and political, which played out in print until the eve of the Revolution, leaving a lasting mark on the French church and state.

Catholic University’s Rare Books and Special Collections and the Department of History are sponsoring a commemorative program featuring guest lecturer Dr. Jeffrey Burson of Georgia Southern University who will speak on Unigenitus and the Catholic Enlightenment in Europe.  CUA curator Lenore Rouse will present findings from the Rare Book collection in The Pope’s Pamphlets:  Jansenism in the Albani Library.  This event will be held November 18th at 5:30 in Great Room C of the Pryzbyla Center at the Catholic University of America, and is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow.  Please RSVP to 202 319-5091 or to cuararebooks@gmail.com

An exhibition of 18th-century Unigenitus-related pamphlets, broadsides and manuscripts material drawn from the Albani collection, assembled by Pope Clement’s family, will be on view in Rare Books and Special Collections (Mullen Library, Room 214) from 18 November until December 6, 2013.
